My first international experience — I was 26 years old, born and raised in India. I vividly recall the rapid heartbeat and wide-eyed fascination as I took in the novel surroundings and diverse people. The absence of my native language and the unfamiliar attire created a sense of novelty, yet it also ignited a fresh excitement for the journey ahead.

Some challenges were unexpected. Our first outing was to the grocery store, where obtaining traditional items proved challenging in 2000, as Indian stores were scarce. Other challenges were cultural: during my initial wellness visit to the doctor, the nurse was surprised to hear me speak English and still held the misconception that elephants were the primary mode of transportation in India.

While settling into my new life, I encountered challenges and moments of uncertainty. While I missed my family back in India, my friends became my extended family. I made regular trips back to India to maintain my cultural roots and the heritage of my motherland.

Reflecting on my journey as a young woman who arrived in this country 24 years ago, I am filled with pride in the accomplishments we have achieved and the life we have built. This country offers numerous opportunities, and I am grateful for the experiences it has provided.
